Picture-perfect beaches, exotic cuisine and a vibrant culture - what more could you possibly want from a holiday destination? There’s no denying that the Caribbean has it all!
Aside from the glorious tropical heat, another of the big draws for cruising in the Caribbean is the chance to wake up on a new island almost every day, which is a fantastic factor when considering value for money.
Whilst many would picture the Caribbean as a perfect place to relax and soak up the sun, it’s also a destination which is packed with adventure. One morning you could be snorkeling with stingrays and the next you could be ziplining over a dense jungle canopy or heading off on a muddy ATV expedition.
However there’s much more to this cruise destination that just its natural splendour. With over 7000 individual islands and 28 different nations there’s a fascinating history of infamous pirates and colonial invasions for you to discover, dating back to 1492 when Christopher Colombus first landed here and claimed the region for Spain.
As a long-haul destination, we recommend adding pre or post cruise stays to your holiday so that you can make the most of your journey to the USA where you’ll embark and disembark from your cruise. Here at WOWCruise we offer a wide choice of Caribbean itineraries that we can enhance with land stays in fantastic cities such as Miami or Fort Lauderdale. Perhaps one of the most dramatic ports of call you’ll cruise into in the Caribbean is St Lucia, which is instantly recognisable thanks to the Pitons, two dramatic volcanic peaks which rise around 1.5 miles off the coast. Thanks to the excellent conservation efforts of the locals of St Lucia, around 19,000 acres of the island is protected as part of the St Lucia National Rainforest. Many visitors here hire a taxi and visit the south of the island which retains pretty French colonial architecture. On St Lucia you can also visit the world’s only ‘drive through’ volcano.
Famous for its legendary beaches, Barbados is a destination that features on many bucket lists. The colourful capital city of Bridgetown is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and here you can visit traditional colonial buildings, plantations and exotic gardens. Some of the most notable points of interest include the very beautiful Carlisle Bay, George Washington House and Harrison’s Cave which was first mentioned in 1795 - the cave is accessible by tram and features incredible examples of stalagmites and stalactites.
Aruba is a small Dutch island found off the coast of Venezuela and it’s a hotspot for catamaran sailing and snorkeling. Aruba also offers spectacular beaches; those with families might want to head to Baby Beach where the shallow and calm waters are ideal for little ones wanting to paddle whilst those seeking a more glamorous ambience might enjoy Palm Beach which is lined with elegant hotels and bars. Eagle Beach is another great option which offers watersports and it’s just an easy 5 minute bus ride from the cruise terminal.
